Story of a moment

"I was born in East London in Mdantsane Township on 24 May 1970, or at least I think so. My birth certificate from my father states that I am Phumla Sigiwe Ngxiki.
According to my mothers information I was born in 1974 and I am Phumla Aumezweni. At school they didn't know when I was born exactly, so I always just thought I was the same age as my classmates. "

I met Phumla in my english class when I was in Cape Town in 2002. Eight years before. in 1994, apartheid ended and in 2001 she went to Cape Town to find a job.

This story of Phumla is merely the history of a human being; one of the billions of human beings that live in this world. One of the 80% of the world's population that live in poverty and live in a shack, without running water, electricity, and not much food. One of a lot of women that have suffered violence. This is a history of a soul among many more that could believe that life isn't worth living ..

Phumla finished her college studies for nursing and at the moment she's working at Maitland Cottage hospital. Now she doesn't live in a shack anymore and she bought

a proper brick house for her and her three children.
Phumla is a woman that has managed to take herself off the rubbish tip and give herself a dignified life.

Step by step, living the moment, with smile.
